The Junges Sinfonieorchester at the University of Münster is a student-oriented ensemble with currently circa 85 active members from all faculties. With its high musical quality, attractive concert programs and first-class soloists, the Orchestra aims to contribute to the cultural appeal of the university. Repeated participation in the European Student Orchestra Festival (ESOF) in Leuven, Belgium (2015 and 2017), in addition to the social and cultural encounters of such a concert tour, has strengthened the motivation to continue on this path.
The Orchestra's core repertoire includes major symphonic works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Most recently, symphonies and solo concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Sibelius and Shostakovich have been an essential part of the program. The orchestra has been in existence since 1986 and is a member of the European Network of University Orchestras (ENUO), Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland and the Bund Deutscher Liebhaberorchester (BDLO). At the beginning of 2018, the Junges Sinfonieorchester was the first cultural group ever to receive the University of Münster's student award for its cultural commitment.
Bastian Heymel
Bastian Heymel grew up in a musically influenced family and was trained on piano and violoncello from an early age. After graduating from high school, he first studied school music, majoring in piano and voice, at the Hannover University of Music and Drama, and later studied psychology and pedagogy at the Leibniz University in Hannover. He then completed his postgraduate artistic studies in orchestral conducting (Kapellmeister studies) at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, which he supplemented with various master classes (taught for example by Sergiu Celibidache). He was also a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation.
In addition to the Junge Sinfonieorchester an der WWU, Heymel has worked with several orchestras, including the Münster Symphony Orchestra, the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic, the Elblandphilharmonie Riesa and the Babelsberg Film Orchestra. Heymel gained many years of conducting experience by leading the symphony orchestra of the Hannover Medical School. During this time, he was able to decisively expand his symphonic repertoire.
At the Theatre Münster, Bastian Heymel conducted numerous repertoire performances from all areas of musical theatre, including operas by Mozart (Entführung aus dem Serail), Wagner (Lohengrin), Verdi (Otello/Rigoletto), Puccini (Madama Butterfly), Dvořák (Rusalka), Meyerbeer (Le Prophète), Berlioz (Bénedict et Béatrice), Rossini (La Cenerentola), Lortzing (Zar und Zimmermann), operettas by Strauss (Die Fledermaus), Léhar (Das Land des Lächelns), Offenbach (Pariser Leben/Die schöne Helena), Zeller (Der Vogelhändler), Benatzky (Im weißen Rössl) as well as musicals by Webber (Evita/Jesus Christ Superstar), Kander (Cabaret), Herman (La cage aux folles) and Holmes (Das Geheimnis des Edwin Drood).
As a solo répétiteur, he developed an extensive and stylistically broad repertoire in opera, ranging from Monteverdi's baroque opera to Richard Wagner's music dramas and contemporary works of musical theatre.
In addition to a teaching position conducting the Junge Sinfonieorchester an der WWU, Heymel also holds a teaching position in accompaniment for voice and ensemble at the Münster University of Music.
